Abstract
In Ayurvedic system of medicines the plant Butea monosperma is having a large demand due to its use in treatment or many chronic and acute disease and disorders. In literature Butea monsperms is ascribed to have antimicrobial aphrodisiac diuretic properties. The present study designed for column chromatographic separation of of phytoconstituents of unsaponifiable matter of Petroleum ether extract of leaves of Butea monosperma. The extraction preformed by soxhlet extractor and identification was performed by phytochemical test. The petroleum ether extract confirms the presence of sterols and triterpenes. The petroleum ether extract of leaves of Butea monosperma was saponified using 1M alcoholic KOH, to separate saponifiable (fatty material) and unsaponofibale matter. Column chromatography is used to purify individual chemical compounds and for preparative applications on scales from micrograms up to kilograms. The sample was eluted in isocratic or gradient manner and fractions were collected. Solvent was recovered by distillation; and fractions giving similar separation pattern on TLC plates were mixed and studied further. Fractions showing mixtures of two or more compounds were purified further. However, fractions showing inseparable mixture of several compounds were rejected. The fractions showing single spots were mixed considering as single compound.
