Producing Steam Using Linear Fresnel Reflecting Solar Thermal Concentrator

Abstract
Solar energy is the most abundant, widely distributed and cleans renewable energy resource which may be harnessed for supplementing the depleting sources of fossil fuels. Countries like India face power crisis on one hand and receive abundant solar energy on the other. The irradiation levels in India range from up to 500 to 700 W/m2 in some areas or even more. There are two routes to harness Solar Energy namely photovoltaic technology, which is a low efficiency technology (5-15%) and solar thermal technology, where efficiencies may raise up to 60%. Each of these technologies has a shared importance in different applications under different conditions. As the insulation intensity is only in the range of 0.5 to 0.7 KW/m2, solar concentrators are required for attaining temperatures appropriate for medium and high temperature applications. Solar Thermal Collectors may be concentrating or Non Concentrating type. This paper describes different types of Solar Concentrating designs with focus on design and development of a ‘Linear Fresnel reflecting solar thermal Concentrator’ (LFRSTC). The LFRSTC system comprises a reflector (concentrator), receiver (target) and solar tracking mechanism. The receiver comprises of coated tube carrying water and covered by a glass plate, it is mounted at an elevation of few meters above the horizontal, parallel to the plane of the mirrors. The reflector is oriented along north-south axis. The LFRSTC setup is used for generating steam which can be used for a variety of applications.
