Abstract
Fine grained soil generally available in desert, near river bank and around sea area. Silty soil loss its shear strength at high water content. The paper deals with the engineering properties of a silty soil collected from sea shore of ‘Kavikamboi”, India. Specific gravity, sieve analysis, hydrometer test and consistency test was performed to study engineering properties of soil. Soil classified as inorganic silt having medium to low plasticity. Marine soil found along the coastal areas of Kavi kamboi, exhibits high compressibility and low shear strength at higher water content. Series of direct shear test were performed at different water content to find optimum water content beyond which soil liquefy. Test result shows that after optimum water content of 20% by total weight of soil, shear strength parameter of soil reduced considerably. Further research work is required to study behavior of silty soil under dynamic loading.
